Opinion on Tibetan issue from an American friend

......

I feel badly that it seems that American people are demonstrating against the Chinese people. I think the people demonstrating do not fully understand the issue, and they are actually demonstrating against the government of China, and not the Chinese people. I also think that China's actions during Tiananmen Square killings and with the imprisonment of journalists has opened the door for criticism of the government of China.

People have seized upon the Tibetan issue as a reason to attack the Chinese government. Since we have spent so much time in China, I personally see how hard it is for the Chinese government to take care of all of the many people, so I have a better understanding of the reasons the Chinese government does what it does. I also have a great love for the Chinese people, and I separate that from any thoughts I may have about governmental tactics of control.

I accept that the Tibet issue is more complicated than it seems here in the US, and I realize I do not have sufficient knowledge to make a judgement. I wish that the people of China understand that Americans are not demonstrating against them.

......

答到,”不说“;
继续问:“那说中文?”;
答到:“不会”;
I was put in prison in China, OK? I did not do anything but just being a tourist there...They kept me for no reason....they said I was a spy...”
本人再次忍无可忍,对他说,“All government do that kind of stuff! (Are you naive or something, using such a thing to accuse Chinese government这句话是在心里讲的,呵呵) CIA does that all the time, don't you know???!!!

From Thinking About Tibet

Tibetan protest disrupting the Olympic torch relay in Paris, London has caused an uproar in the Chinese community worldwide. Yunyun and I even had a fight over the issue on the dinner table recently. I admire her passion for our country and the outright rejection of lies being permeated throughout the western media, whether intentional or un-intentional.

She referred to me some online posts expressing anger even hate towards Dalai Lama, Tibetan protesters, Western interference. Especially the recent insentitive comments by Jack Cafferty of CNN by calling billions of Chinese people "goons and thugs." I felt the same anger all Chinese people feel, but at the same time, what had happened is making me uneasy. People, common Americans, are now relating the 2008 Olympics to the 1936 German Olympics hosted by Adolf Hitler.

Are Americans and Europeans simply misinformed? Perhaps. But in the deeper level, I think they are threatened. It is not because of the so-called human right abuses. They fear China, because China is rising and China is out of their control. Japan still executes people using gallows, but no one cares about that, rather most westerners considers Japan as a jewel of modern society. This is all because people believe Japan is under the supervision of the United States, and doesn't pose a threat.

China, on the other hand, is a communist regime, spends billions of dollars on military, spends even more in acquiring raw materials from all around the world. What are they planning doing? No one knows, not even Chinese. Meanwhile, all production jobs are going to China, all other world powers are running significant trade deficits against China. We have seen a quite yet surely Political and Economic power redistribution. Of course, these people watching their own pie getting smaller and smaller everyday must vent their fear and anger one way or another. How can they allow China to flaunt its economic prosperity without dirtying it with some smudges. Finding China's faults here and there can flare up the anti-Chinese sentiments, putting pressures on Chinese government to give unfair favors and hold the Chinese nation hostage, in other words, keep it under control like a puppy dog.

I admit, this intention held by some westerners, is despicable. But what should we, as Chinese, do? Engage in shout matches on the street with the Free Tibet protesters? Expressing anger and frustrations towards the unfair media coverage? Clarifying all the lies and unfairness to the world repeatedly? No, those are useless, even worse than useless. They are useless to change the world opinion, because the source of their anti-Chinese sentiment is not human right abuses, or the lack of democracy in China (US makes plenty of friends in the world lacking those two), it is fear and anger. No matter how clearly we explain China is improving in human rights and how Tibet has improved from a dirt poor serfdom to a economic prosperous region, people will turn a deaf ear, and continue their protest.Those activities are worse than useless, because it flares up anger and frustration within the Chinese communities, polarizing us against them, deepening the antagonistic feelings on both sides. Putting world peace and economic stability in danger. So the more anger we show, the happier we make those few people hoping for the doom of China. The more anger we show, the more divided the world is, the more isolated China will become.
